Never Give Up Hope
It was a tough year, for Linda. The year end holidays was fast approaching, examinations were rounding off and lots of plans were being made…… Linda got caught up in the middle of it all.
Thoughts of finishing off was her priority, but then, there’s no way possible she was gonna finish before the scheduled departure time for students.
Nigeria is tough enough quite alright, but life has its own way of throwing things around.
She had hoped to join her sister for their Xmas trip to Abuja but still there were tons of school work to be done because it was her final year.
Several nights, she’d stay up to add up a page or two to her project work, and also steal some time to read. Endlessly, she worked, prayed and hoped that on the last day, which is “project defense day” she’d rush in, defend her project and take the first flight to Lagos the next morning. I guess, the saying that “good things never happen easily” was starting to reflect in her situation as she tried to do her best in the exams.
Change of plans
A few days later, they were called in by her project supervisor, and told that there’s gonna be a redo of one of their core courses. Out of surprise she yelled “No” we can’t, i mean, i am gonna be unavailable. It is the day for project defending and there’s no way possible, we’re are gonna be able to combine the two.
She almost resorted to tears, because of the disappointment she felt knowing that her plans has been disrupted, all she had hoped for started to feel like a never ending race. All she could think of, was for a miracle to happen. Well, just like the Holy Book says, “there is a time for everything” there came a voice whispering deep into her ears, “Linda, are you kidding, you are prepared for all of this” even though the exam is gonna be re-written severally, you’d read for it and there’s no failing it.
Project Defense Day
And so, Linda got up that fateful morning, showered and kitted up, looking smart and a little jumpy. She headed straight to school, with her heart in her pocket, her tongue between her teeth and her legs racing like an athlete’s. In a couple of hours it was over, and she was waiting to be called upon to sit before the panel of lecturers for her project defense, and then there’s an echo of her name, but she couldn’t answer cos she was lost in thoughts.
We suppose, she’s absent because nobody is answering to that name…….. Madam, are you here for the defending? the cleaner asked! Yes i am, waiting to be called upon. My name is Linda, just in case you hear the name….
Oh!! They already called a Linda but she was absent and i think someone else has just gone in…
Scared and confused, she ran in, paced for a second or two, then blurted out suddenly… I am Linda, sorry i had to go to the ladies cos of my stomach issues, may i be pardoned please?
One of the Lecturers looked at her with a frown and the other, instructed her to sit and begin the exercise.
Before dark it was over, she walked to the bus station feeling beat and exhausted. Even though she did so well in the exercise, one load was lifted and in a few weeks results would be out. In a couple of minutes, she was home, rushing to get dinner and prepare for her trip and an early night rest.
The next morning
Bang Bang, knock knock on Linda’s door. She felt it as though it was a dream till the sound became loud and alive. It was already morning, she was flustered and confused as she felt like a child who’s been deprived of sleep.
I heard you are flying to Lagos? She jumped off the bed, opened the door and standing before her was her college buddy.

I had no idea you’d still be home considering that you mentioned taking the first flight to Lagos, I just wanted to check, luckily for me you are very much around… her buddy said smiling! Dumbfounded, she appeared, as she hurried to the bathroom. With not much time wasted, she got in the car and off to the airport. Meanwhile, she’s told herself that she wasn’t gonna worry anymore, because no matter how much she’d worry, it wouldn’t change a thing.
She held on to her faith, that everything was gonna fall in place no matter what happened.
Back to Lagos
And so, Linda arrived Lagos safely, Lo and behold, her sister was at the airport waiting to pick her up .
“I had the trip rescheduled” For real!! Exclaimed Linda…. I know how much you wanted to come. But first, let’s get you home and treat you to a nice meal. We are so proud of you…… Linda’s sister replied…
Never give up hope, just like Linda, she worked really hard and in the end, she got what she deserved.
It might not be promising at first, but keep up the good work, don’t relent, it might just work out in your favor….
Good things happen to those who consistently work for it…..
